Obetz City Council has approved updated rules for electric bicycles with one goal in mind: helping keep our community members safe while riding.
As e-bikes continue to become more popular, especially among younger riders, City Council updated the City’s rules to add additional safety measures for anyone under the age of 18.
What Are the Different Classes of E-Bikes?
E-bikes are divided into three classes:
- Class 1: A pedal-assisted e-bike. The motor helps while you pedal and stops assisting at 20 mph.
- Class 2: An e-bike that can be powered by the motor without pedaling, typically using a throttle. Motor assistance stops at 20 mph.
- Class 3: A pedal-assisted e-bike that can provide assistance up to 28 mph.
What Are the New Rules?
Under the updated City rules:
- Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet when riding or traveling as a passenger on a Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 e-bike.
- Anyone under 18 cannot carry a passenger while operating an e-bike.
- Adults carrying a passenger under 18 on a Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 e-bike must make sure the passenger is wearing a helmet.
- Parents and guardians are responsible for making sure minors in their care follow these rules.
These updates are effective immediately. Not following the rules is considered a standard traffic offense, meaning the rider can receive a ticket. For anyone under the age of 18, repeated violations may eventually result in the case being referred to juvenile court. Parents or guardians may also be ticketed if they knowingly allow their child to operate an e-bike without the required helmet.
City Council wants residents of all ages to be able to enjoy riding throughout Obetz while taking simple precautions that can help prevent injuries and keep our community members safe.
